๏ปฟFootball is one of the most physically demanding sports a young athlete can play, and with that demand comes a predictable set of injuries. At Franklin Lakes Chiropractic and Sports Medicine in Franklin Lakes, NJ, we see these five football injuries repeatedly throughout the fall season. Knowing what they are can help parents and coaches catch them early.

1. Neck Stingers

A stinger, also called a burner, occurs when the neck is forcefully bent to one side, stretching or compressing the nerves of the brachial plexus. The result is a brief but intense burning or electric shock sensation down one arm. Repeated stingers can lead to chronic nerve irritation and should always be evaluated.

2. Shoulder Separations (AC Joint Sprains)

Falling on an outstretched arm or taking a direct hit to the shoulder can separate the acromioclavicular joint. This is extremely common in linemen and skill positions alike. Chiropractic evaluation helps determine severity and ensures the joint heals in proper alignment.

3. Low Back Strain and Spinal Compression

Linemen absorb enormous compressive forces on every play. Over a season, this repetitive loading can create muscle strains, facet joint irritation, and even stress reactions in the lumbar vertebrae. Early intervention prevents chronic back problems that can follow athletes into adulthood.

4. Knee Ligament Sprains

MCL sprains are among the most common knee injuries in football, often the result of lateral hits or awkward planting and cutting. While ACL injuries are less frequent, they are far more serious and often require surgical intervention. Any knee pain after contact should be evaluated promptly.

5. Turf Toe

This hyperextension injury of the big toe joint is increasingly common on artificial turf. It sounds minor but can be significantly disabling and tends to linger when not properly treated. Proper joint mobilization and load management can dramatically speed recovery.

A Note on Concussions

Any blow to the head that results in confusion, headache, vision changes, or balance issues requires immediate medical evaluation. Chiropractic care, specifically upper cervical work, can play a supportive role in post-concussion recovery alongside medical management.
